When the folks at Volkswagen were developing the all-new 2012 Beetle, they were committed to showcasing the style and spirit of the original, but also to updating the new car to provide “all the benefits of today’s technologies and efficiencies”—and that includes the latest powertrain technologies and the kind of fuel efficiency demanded by today’s drivers. So, naturally, they made sure one of the automaker’s innovative TDI clean-diesel engines was available for the reborn Bug.

With the available four-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbodiesel, the 2012 Beetle is expected to achieve EPA ratings of 29 mpg city/40 mpg highway/33 mpg combined, making it the most fuel-efficient Beetle ever offered by the company. And at the same time, the quiet and smooth-running powerplant lives up to its “clean” moniker by meeting all U.S. emissions requirements. But that doesn’t mean the diesel Beetle will be any less fun to drive. In fact, because diesel engines are known for their robust torque—236 lb.-ft. of which will be on tap in the new VW, along with 140 hp—owners will benefit from unexpectedly snappy off-the-line acceleration.

Notably, the TDI-toting Beetle will join a highly economical VW diesel lineup that also includes:

  • VW Golf TDI—30 mpg city/42 mpg highway/30 mpg combined
  • VW Jetta TDI—30 mpg city/42 mpg highway/30 mpg combined
  • VW Jetta SportWagen TDI—30 mpg city/42 mpg highway/30 mpg combined
  • VW Touareg TDI—19 mpg city/28 mpg highway/22 mpg combined

All of which means the latest TDI VW should do A-OK with U.S. customers when it debuts this fall at Volkswagen Dealers In Charlotte and across the U.S.
