According to the latest reports, Volkswagen plans to move forward with production of the Volkswagen BlueSport Concept. The design of this mid-engined two-seater has reportedly been very close to completion and has been on the verge of production for a while.

Although the design is near complete, there are still engineering challenges to work out of course. But sources say that any production model will remain very similar to the concept.

Powering the Volkswagen BlueSport is expected to be the same unit found in the concept, a 2.0-liter diesel engine that produces 180 horsepower. VW also expects that with this unit the small, lightweight BlueSport will go from 0-62 mph in just 6.6 seconds and top out at 140 mph.

Volkswagen’s parts bin is deep, which is why the BlueSport may feature several engines options, including the 1.4-liter TFSI supercharged engine from the Polo GTI or the 2.0-liter turbocharged unit from the Golf GTI. Engines will be mated to a six-speed manual or VW’s venerable DSG transmission.
