The Volkswagen Polo has been named the 2010 World Car of the Year, a coveted title that few cars earn. With its fresh design, combined with affordability and extreme fuel-efficiency, the Polo has become a huge hit with consumers in Europe. But there is one huge drawback to the Polo – it isn’t available in the U.S.
Although it may not be for sale here, we at least can live vicariously through the folks at AutoCar, who just took the 2011 Volkswagen Polo GTI for a test drive.
Powering the Volkswagen Polo GTI is a 1.4-liter TSI engine that produces a 180 horsepower and 184 pound feet of torque with the help of a turbocharger and supercharger. This complex unit is mated to either a 7-speed twin-clutch DSG automatic transmission or a six-speed manual. The ultra compact Polo can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 6.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 142 mph.
Sadly, Volkswagen has no plans to bring the Polo here. Instead, American compact car buyers will have to make due with the Golf, which I suppose isn’t really much of a sacrifice.
