Police departments rarely utilize diesel-powered vehicles for patrol cars, and even fewer use Volkswagens – at least here in the U.S. But thanks to a new donation from VW, the City of Chattanooga and Hamilton County may consider the value of a diesel-powered VW yet.

According to Hickory Volkswagen Dealers, Volkswagen is building a plant in Tennessee to build the upcoming replacement for the Passat, code named New Midsize Sedan (NMS). In an effort forge strong ties with its new neighbors, Volkswagen donated two Jetta SportWagen TDIs each to the Chattanooga police and the Hamilton County police.

“Volkswagen is thrilled to be able to provide technologically advanced Jetta SportWagen vehicles to both the City of Chattanooga and Hamilton County police departments to help keep the area safe while driving in a reliable, versatile and stylish vehicle,” said Frank Fischer, Chairman and CEO of Volkwagen’s Chattanooga Operations. “Volkswagen is committed to continue building a longstanding relationship with the Chattanooga community and we know these vehicles will provide the officers of this area with the kind of performance they need to get the job done.”

These Jettas are ready for action, complete with body kits and chrome exhaust tips for an “imposing presence,” emergency lighting and police badging, and special communications gear.

“Since Volkswagen announced their billion dollar investment in Hamilton County they have demonstrated numerous times their willingness to be a good corporate neighbor,” said Hamilton County Mayor Claude Ramsey. “Today’s gift of two law enforcement vehicles is further proof of Volkswagen’s commitment to Hamilton County and we thank them for their generosity.”

Powering these menacing patrol cars is a potent 2.0-liter TDI clean diesel four-cylinder engine which produces 236 foot-pounds of torque and still manages to achieve an impressive 42 miles per gallon on the highway.
